Every other week a group of our students are supported to the Calderdale Self Advocacy group in Halifax. Students have an opportunity to speak up and be part of a group that makes a difference to the local community.
We have teamed up with Voluntary Action Calderdale to train some of our students as Engagement Champions. They are trained in how to speak to their family and friends about the local NHS service. They find out what they like or do not like about their local health service. They also discuss what changes could be made to make this service better. The results are then reported back.
We help to raise money for local events and causes. Our students chose to do a sponsored walk for the Hebden Bridge flood relief.
Our IT technician provides technical support for free at the Helping Hands home care service.
Our Magpie Movers dance group are invited to perform at lots of local events. These include summer fetes and galas, Christmas lights switch on events in the local towns, local residential homes and community events and shows.
We have a member of the Citizens Advice Calderdale team who joins us one day a week. This is to provide help and support to students or parents and carers. You can get support with filling in forms, welfare benefits issues, money problems, budgeting, housing issues and how to maximise your income. Appointments can be made at our main reception desk or you can phone 01422 383550.
